JOB SUMMARY
A Group Facilitator is a mental health professional responsible for the facilitation of support groups for people impacted by cancer at CSC Iowa & NW Illinois. Group Facilitators help members connect with one another as they discover ways to reduce isolation, regain a sense of control, and find hope. Group Facilitators are specifically trained in the Cancer Support Community (CSC) philosophy and support group methodology and utilize those specific skills in group facilitation at CSC. Facilitators continue to cultivate CSC group facilitation skills through participation in regular clinical supervision meetings. Facilitators will also oversee and/or conduct educational workshops, family sessions, intake interviews and other programs as well as representing the CSC mission, core concepts and philosophy to the general public.
Duties and Responsibilities
I. Support Group Facilitation and Management
· Facilitate group members in sharing their cancer-related experiences, gaining knowledge and information in regularly scheduled support group meetings by utilizing the CSC support group model.
· Serve as an expert in group facilitation and the psychosocial aspects of cancer across the
continuum (diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life), but not as an expert in cancer or cancer treatment.
· Conduct pre-group orientation meetings and collect paperwork when required by the Program Director.
· Provide telephone, mail and/or email follow-up with group members as needed and per CSC affiliate protocol.
· Maintain paperwork specific to group management (rosters, attendance, group notes, pre-group interview forms, etc).
· Submit all required attendance sheets, reports and staff time in an accurate
manner.
· Provide back-up coverage for other support groups as needed and if time allows.
· Attend monthly clinical supervision one-time per month.
II. General Program Administration and Direct Service
· Serve as a CSC “host” for educational workshops, and other special
programs. Expectations include, but are not limited to setting up room, setting up audio/visual components, introducing speakers/workshop leaders, providing introductory remarks that include a brief overview of CSC, participating in the program, occasional facilitation with presenter, fielding questions and answers, providing evaluations and closure and providing feedback to the Program Director on the process and content of the workshop.
· Provide other program support depending on resource availability.
· Voluntarily attend participant social events and fundraising activities without pay to
celebrate the Cancer Support Community as needed or defined by CSC management.
· Work to build community among all participants, staff and others.
III. Supervision and Professional Development
· Complete training experience at the local CSC under the direction of the Program Director.
· Training will include group observation, independent readings, and necessary office training.
· Participate in regular clinical supervision meetings under the direction of the Program
Director at least once per month.
· Receive an annual written performance review from the Program Director.
· Provide annual documentation of current licensure
· Voluntarily participate in ongoing continuing education opportunities related to
psychosocial oncology.
· Serve as a voluntary “ambassador” to spread awareness about CSC across the
community at large.
Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) in the mental health field from an accredited school (i.e., BSW, MSW, LMSW, LISW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT) or Clinical Psychologist (PhD).
· Eligible candidates should be licensed in their profession or eligible to be licensed in both Iowa and Illinois.
· Strong clinical skills, including individual and support group experience and ability to work with issues surrounding chronic and life-threatening illness.
· One to three years experience in oncology and/or support group facilitation highly desired.
· Willingness to master and implement CSC psychosocial support methods, participate in
ongoing clinical supervision, and the overall experience of a support community.
· Proof of documentation as being registered with Iowa/Illinois Board of Social Work or Iowa/Illinois Board of Behavioral Sciences. All records are to be kept current, and the PD must be notified immediately if the ability to practice clinically in the states of Iowa and Illinois lapses.
· Ability to administer CSC policies and procedures while maintaining a warm, professional, personal, informative, and effective program.
· Good verbal and written communication skills are essential.
· Ability to work a varied and flexible schedule, including evenings and Saturdays.
· Commitment to working as a team member in a supportive community.
· Bilingual not required but encouraged.
· A passion for CSC Iowa & NW Illinois and its mission.
