The Director of Development and Communications plays a key role on the senior leadership team at the Fine Arts Work Center. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director and Board Advancement Committee to develop and lead FAWC’s fundraising and communications strategies.
This position is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive annual fundraising campaign that includes individual gifts; foundation, corporate, and government giving; as well as special events. The Director also oversees marketing and communications efforts designed to promote FAWC’s programs and raise the profile of the organization locally, nationally, and globally. This position supervises a team of development and marketing staff professionals.

Fundraising
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Board Advancement Committee to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet FAWC’s annual revenue goals, including individual support, institutional giving, and special events.
- Develop annual fundraising messaging and successfully integrate this into year-round outreach and communications efforts.
- Monitor and analyze fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed to achieve financial projections.
- Oversee a successful year-end appeal effort.
- Manage Director’s Circle membership program.
- Oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising events that engage donors and raise vital financial support for FAWC, including an annual Summer Awards Celebration in July and multi-market fundraising and cultivation events throughout the year.
- Lead effort to grow foundation, government, and corporate giving in alignment with FAWC’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.
- Track and report on fundraising progress to the Executive Director and Board of Trustees.
- Manage team of fundraising professionals on staff, providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
Marketing
- Develop an organization-wide, multi-channel communications strategy to raise awareness of the Fine Arts Work Center’s mission and programs.
- Promote creative communications approaches that effectively highlight the vision, legacy, and impact of the Fine Arts Work Center.
- Maintain an editorial calendar and align cross-department staff around its successful implementation.
- Oversee the continued development and use of the Fine Arts Work Center brand.
- Supervise ongoing digital strategy to increase engagement on social media channels.
- Direct the creation of all print and digital branded materials, including but not limited to promotional catalogs, print publications such as newsletters and annual reports, website copy, e-newsletters, and other email communications.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and Communications Manager on public relations efforts to secure local and national press. Nurture relations with journalists and ensure that the press list is maintained and up to date.
Other
- Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Trustees Advancement Committee.
- Supervise three staff in the Development and Communications Department, including a full-time Institutional Giving Senior Manager, a full-time Communications Manager, and a part-time Design and Web Development position. Collaborate with the Administrative Manager on fundraising-related tasks. Promote a culture of quality performance and continuous improvement that values learning and collaboration.
- Manage communications and fundraising-related consultants, such as graphic designers, event consultants, photographers, and videographers.
- Play a key role in implementing the Strategic Plan and developing the upcoming Comprehensive Fundraising Campaign.
Qualifications
- 5-7 years of experience in non-profit development and/or communications
- Demonstrated track record of success in developing and implementing communications and/or fundraising strategies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with multiple stakeholders and advance Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access values
- Ability to take initiative, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, problem-solve, adhere to deadlines, and work as part of a team
- Experience with fundraising software and donor databases
- Interest, knowledge, and background in visual arts or writing
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and WordPress
