The Education Assistant position at Geeking Out Kids of Color (GOKiC) is crucial in supporting our educational efforts. GOKiC is a BIPOC-led nonprofit organization with a mission to liberate BIPOC youth through technology and mentorship by developing decolonized tech education programs to nurture community leaders. In this role, the Education Assistant will primarily aid educators in developing and delivering our structured curricula, such as curriculum development and adaptation, teaching, engaging with youth and families through recruitment and events, fostering relationships, and communication under the guidance of the lead educator. Continuous professional growth is integral to this role, potentially leading to future opportunities as a full educator.
2 Educator Assistant Positions (Hybrid, mostly in-person - White Center & West Seattle)
Part Time: up to 16 hours per week
$23-$26 / per hour
Start date: 9/2/2025
We encourage college students to apply! This role is primarily works afterschool & afternoon.
Responsibilities
Assistance with Teaching - 60%
- Assist in preparing for in-person classroom activities.
- Lead students through various activities, providing structure and adjusting the pace to accommodate all students' abilities, under the direction of the lead educator.
- Reflect on each day’s classroom session, identifying successes and areas for improvement and growth.
- Assist with tracking student attendance.
- Support classroom management by helping maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
Curriculum Development 25%
- Collaborate with fellow educators and the curriculum team to develop curricula for upcoming classroom sessions, under the guidance of an experienced lead.
- Participate in testing and refining curriculum to ensure they meet high standards of quality, engagement, and enjoyment.
- Participate in “teach-ins,” where team members demonstrate mastery of a chosen topic to their peers.
- Assist in logging, uploading, and organizing curriculum materials in Google Drive, ensuring accessibility and alignment with program standards.
- Help develop and submit lists of curriculum supplies and food needed for each program quarter in coordination with the lead educator.
Youth and Family Engagement 5%
- Recruit students to enroll in GOKiC programs.
- Showcase program successes.
- Capture photos and/or videos of program activities in progress.
Professional Development 5%
- Attend workshops to acquire skills that enhance performance in the role.
- Engage with readings and resources on topics that align with our mission and foster disciplinary breadth.
- Participate in growth and empowerment processes to support personal and professional development.
Administrative 5%
- Respond to and compose work-related emails in a timely and professional manner.
- Participate in regular all-staff meetings to stay informed and engaged with team activities.
- Attend one-on-one progress and debriefing meetings to discuss performance, goals, and development.
- Participate in site-based huddles to support coordination, teamwork, and clear communication across team members.
- Support documentation and sharing of program highlights to showcase impact and student engagement.
- Submit program-related expenses in a timely manner, ensuring proper documentation and alignment with budget guidelines.
Job Expected Competencies
- Basic knowledge of critical race theory with the ability to teach youth
- Cultural competency, with an understanding of positionality within the classroom environment.
- Basic knowledge of computing and coding
- Foundational knowledge of teaching techniques and classroom management
- Knowledge and skills to support social-emotional development in children
- Basic understanding of child development (e.g., youth attention span, need for repetition).
- Knowledge of project management, including setting deadlines, planning, and goal-setting.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders (e.g. parents, youth, partners, team members)
- Adaptability and flexibility, with the ability to transition seamlessly between projects with varying demands and expectations.
- Even temperament and professionalism, maintaining emotional control and responding appropriately to negative behavior, both in the classroom (virtual or physical) and in the workplace with colleagues.
- Strong multi-tasking skills, comfortable juggling multiple priorities (e.g., switching from teaching to curriculum building).
- Conflict resolution skills, with the ability to address conflicts and differences in a timely manner with the appropriate personnel.
- Recruitment skills, with the ability to actively identify potential students for enrollment, both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Education, Experience, Abilities
- Available up to 16 hours between 2-7pm with some additional morning availability preferred.
- Must have interest in working with multicultural youth who are overcoming intersecting barriers to success.
