ELA/ Reading Specialist

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is looking for a passionate educator to join our team as an ELA/Reading Specialist. The ELA/ Reading Specialist’s primary job duty is to support our members struggling with their academic/reading goals by implementing intentional programming and supports. The ELA/ Reading Specialist will join a small and enthusiastic team of Youth Development Professionals supporting our NYS OCFS-licensed clubhouses located in the Northside Village and Steinmetz municipal housing complexes. Those with prior experience in OCFS regulated childcare facilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
General Function:The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in literacy education and be committed to fostering a love of reading among students. The ELA/ Reading Specialist is responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the ELA/ Reading program activities in collaboration with each clubhouse’s Director. This includes but is not limited to lesson planning, group instruction, one-on-one instruction, academic support plans, school work recovery and curriculum review. In addition to the general duties associated with this position the ELA/Reading Specialist will help contribute to a positive club atmosphere by supporting other program areas and creating a Fun Friday Club to be hosted once a week. The ELA/Reading Specialist will perform their duties in accordance with the standards of practice and established policies of both the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady.
● PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT: The ELA/Reading Specialist plans academic programs and activities that are consistent with the organization's youth development mission and adheres to LEAPS grant objectives and goals. The ELA/Reading Specialist will utilize a variety of programmatic tools provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to ensure students are engaged and that proper program evaluation takes place.
● HEALTH AND SAFETY OF MEMBERS: The ELA/ Reading Specialist establishes a program space that insures the health and safety of members. This includes maintaining the cleanliness and order in the designated program space. All Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady employees are considered Mandated Reporters and required to follow BGCS and State procedure when filing reports of abuse or neglect. Training on appropriate procedures is paid and provided by BGCS upon starting the position.
● CLUB CLIMATE FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT: The ELA/ Reading Specialist contributes to the creation of the overall Club's climate for positive youth development to take place by encouraging and promoting students’ passion for learning.
● IMPLEMENTING DAILY PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES: The ELA/Reading Specialist personally plans, implements ELA centered programs in the Clubhouse. The Unit Director/ Program Director works with the ELA/Reading Specialist to properly evaluate and document outcomes.
● PROVISION OF GUIDANCE SERVICES: The ELA/Reading Specialist provides individual guidance to youth and group instruction relative to their personal need. The ELA/Reading Specialist will communicate and interact with members and other staff on a daily basis.
● ADMINISTRATION AND ASSIGNED RESOURCES: The ELA/Reading Specialist manages necessary administrative functions to accurately capture attendance and prepare activities for the program. The ELA/Reading Specialist will manage a small classroom space of supplies and assigned resources.
● PROMOTION AND MARKETING OF PROGRAMS: The ELA/ Reading Specialist works with the Unit Director/Program Director to promote and market the program(s) to current members, future members and the community.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Schenectady is looking for candidates who can work the following hours:
2:00pm-7:00pm
The position is Monday-Friday, 20-25 hours weekly.
Additional hours outside of program times are required for administrative tasks, planning, and training purposes.
