About Us:
Magical Creatures Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit farm animal rescue and sanctuary located on Hawaii's Big Island. Completely volunteer-run, our sanctuary was founded in 2018 and is now home to over 90 animals who were saved from slaughter, rescued from neglect, have special needs, or were orphaned or injured in the wild.
Major Objective:
We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, and motivated HR Manager to lead volunteer and staff recruitment, engagement, and retention. This role is critical to identifying, recruiting, onboarding, and retaining talent that is motivated, skilled, passionate, and the best culture-fit for our organization. By implementing industry standards and best practices, our HR Manager helps us ensure organizational effectiveness, use our resources efficiently, and build a strong community of volunteers and animal advocates.
Responsibilities:
- Maintains active communication with volunteer applicants, new recruits, current volunteers, sanctuary leadership, and outside partners or stakeholders.
- Recruits new volunteers for specific team(s) and delegates recruiting to other leadership members as needed, interviews applicants, and matches volunteer applicants with available positions that best fit their skills and interests.
- Manages the applicant waitlist and conducts timely follow-ups regarding available opportunities within the organization.
- Owns onboarding documents, waivers, releases, codes of conduct, etc.
- Coordinates all volunteer training through their direct manager, and communicates with leadership regarding outside training opportunities that do not fall within this position's realm.
- Drives volunteer engagement, feedback, and performance reviews.
- Actively improves the volunteer recruitment process by adjusting recruitment tools and onboarding processes to strive for continuous improvement. Assesses the sanctuary’s volunteer and staff needs.
- Collaborates with current volunteers and other leadership members to gain insight regarding areas for improvement.

- Collaborates with Sanctuary Directors and Leadership
- Supervises HR Generalist
Qualifications:
- 18 years of age or older
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or current enrollment in a relevant degree program (preferred)
- Basic computer competency (e.g., Excel, Word, etc.)
- Excellent writing and organization skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish relationships with diverse stakeholders
- Knowledge of U.S. voluntary employment regulations, ethics, and best practices
- Recruitment and/or HR experience (3+ years preferred)
- Leadership experience (2+ years preferred)
- Experience working with and leading volunteers and/or volunteer groups (1-2 years preferred)
- Commitment to the organization's mission, values, and ethical standards
- Volunteer experience with Magical Creatures Sanctuary (preferred)
Training:
- On-the-job training with current director(s)
Time and Place:
- Virtual work. Flexible schedule, ensuring all role needs are met.
Commitment:
We require a minimum commitment of 6 months of 5-10 hours/week for this volunteer position to ensure consistency and effectiveness in our administrative department. This commitment supports Magical Creatures Sanctuary long-term goals of creating and maintaining a positive volunteer experience and retention efforts.
Supervision:
Direct supervision by the Co-Executive Director of Onsite Operations. Indirect supervision by the Co-Executive Director of Administration and Board Directors.

Expected hours: 5 – 10 per week
