Paralegal / Legal Assistant

Schedule

The working schedule for this position is 9AM - 5PM, three days a week. One day per week in person is required at our Headquarters office with the other two working days remote.

Who We Are

ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 30,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life-saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals.

We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need.

Summary

Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) is one of the largest animal welfare organizations in the country, taking in more than 30,000 animals each year. We are different from other rescue organizations because we do not turn away any homeless, abandoned, injured or sick animal in need, including cats, dogs, rabbits, small mammals, reptiles, birds, farm animals and wildlife. ACC is the only 501(c)(3) nonprofit in NYC with this unique responsibility.

ACC is actively seeking a part-time Paralegal/Legal Assistant to support the General Counsel and perform a variety of legal and administrative tasks that facilitate the legal department.

Ideal candidates include attorneys, paralegals, law students, administrative assistants, and contract administrators.

Required Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED and Bachelor’s degree required. Law students are encouraged to apply.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Adobe including ability to scan, format, edit and redact .DOC and .PDF files.
Strong organizational skills.
Acute attention to detail, superior writing skills.
Strong and confident communicator in person and on the phone.

Essential Job Functions:

Manage FOIL request responses (e.g. compile responsive records, redact confidential information).
Case management and support: track litigation, manage case calendar and deadlines, file and retrieve court documents in person and electronically using New York State eCourts and Federal (PACER) efiling systems.
Draft and prepare legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, discovery materials, correspondence, and other related administrative duties.

Other Responsibilities:

Assist with contract management, i.e. tracking deadlines, deliverables, compliance, and recordkeeping.
Assist with contract review, analysis, drafting, and updating legal agreements.
Assist with registration, renewal, and maintenance of various permits and licenses required for shelter operations and adoption events.
Manage responses to civil subpoenas and law enforcement requests for records and information.
Coordinate with IT department to run database reports using specialized software.
Conduct legal research relating to relevant laws, regulations, precedents, and other legal questions.
Attend hearings, meetings, trainings, conferences, workshops, and other events as needed.
Office management, record keeping and filing, and other administrative duties as directed.
Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Paralegal certification preferred.
2-3 years of Paralegal, Legal Assistant and/or Administrative Assistant experience preferred.
Ability to learn quickly and navigate ACC’s animal records database.
Able to work independently.
Ability to multitask and manage time efficiently.

Work Environment

ACC has shelter locations across the 5 boroughs and a corporate headquarters in downtown Manhattan. This position is located at ACC’s headquarters but may include working at ACC’s Queens shelter or other locations within New York City. When visiting shelter locations, employees may be exposed to odors or airborne particles including animal fur and chemicals, and high levels of noise.

Reports To: General Counsel

Overtime: This is a non-union position and is eligible for overtime.
