New Buildings Institute (NBI) is at the forefront of a wide range of national and regional policy, technical, market, and program initiatives focusing on high performance buildings. Widely respected in the industry for its leading-edge work on improving building performance, NBI is a nonprofit, mission-driven organization committed to making a difference. Position Overview
The Communications Manager (CM) will be an integral role of NBI, working on the Leadership and Market Development team and have three core functions. First, the CM will closely collaborate with the Senior Communications & Events Strategist to develop and implement an NBI Communications Plan, as well as oversee NBI’s marketing presence across platforms (directly or through managing contractors) in service of the plan. Secondly, this role will serve as the primary liaison between program staff and MarCom subcontractors, tools, and resources. This will require orchestrating an efficient org-wide tracking system and process that will enable project leads to get MarCom needs met (both in and out of house). Finally, this position will manage digital marketing to support NBI events and programs and includes coordinating social media, overseeing the NBI website maintenance, and leading new website development.
Key Responsibilities:
Corporate Communications Presence (~40%)
- Co-lead a quarterly assessment of which platforms and tools NBI should (and should not) be leveraging for desired impact, determining how and when we want to use them.
- Oversee the organization's marketing presence, including our website, social media accounts, listservs, and analytics systems with support from contractors.
- Maintain directly or with support of subcontractors NBI’s owned and operated channels, including brand identity and assets, messaging, internal website, and social media.
- Collaborate with the Sr. Technical Writer in providing materials support for NBI priorities.
- Support the Senior Communications & Events Strategist and Collaborate with Sr. Technical Writer and program staff in the development of NBI’s annual report.
- Manage NBI’s communications and content calendar.
- Monitor, analyze, and report on the effectiveness of marketing and communication efforts, using data and metrics to make informed decisions and optimize future strategies.
- Manage the development and maintenance of brand guidelines, graphic design standards, communication templates, and marketing collateral to ensure brand integrity.
- Provide oversight and maintenance for NBI’s photo and stock photography library.
Client Deliverable Enablement (~40%)
- Serve as a strategic and consultative partner to program staff on MarCom activities that support their project goals and client deliverables.
- Work with program staff and Contracts & Grants Manager to recruit, vet, and manage a team of quality contractors to leverage for comms activities and client deliverables.
- Develop a centrally managed but open org-wide tracking system for MarCom contractors. Build an accompanying process that can support program project leaders’ needs, ultimately meeting the project and client’s objectives, leveraging contractor expertise.
- Collaborate with NBI’s Contracts & Grants Manager to keep contractors current.
- Work with project leads to ensure consistent messaging and brand representation across client deliverables and communications to ensure brand continuity and integrity.
New Website Development and Website Management (~20%)
- Support NBI’s websites by providing content and page layout direction, information hierarchy best practices for information organization, clarity, and readability.
- Develop a holistic strategy for NBI’s website maintenance across multiple brands owned and/or operated by the organization, as well as a transition plan for necessary archival.
- With support and input from program colleagues, lead the development process for NBI’s new website, with an emphasis on new website user interface and sitemap direction, visual direction support, and accessibility considerations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
- 5-7 years of professional experience in communications or project coordination.
- Experience supporting the implementation of communication or marketing plans.
- Familiarity with managing contracts, vendors, or external service providers. Knowledge of design software, website functionality, or content creation tools.
Competencies:
- Aptitude to serve as an internal consultant and advisor to project teams on how to strategically activate Marcom activities to elevate project impacts.
- · Strong organizational and coordination skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
- Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills with attention to detail.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills to liaise between project teams, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Ability to monitor contractor deliverables, track progress, and flag issues.
- Proficiency in digital marketing platforms, content management, and analytics tools.
- Strong teamwork skills and ability to work collaboratively.
- Resourceful, proactive, and adaptable in dynamic project environments.
Location
This position is a full-time, exempt role based out of NBI’s office in downtown Portland, Oregon. Qualified candidates residing in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Pennsylvania, New York, Virginia, Georgia, and Rhode Island are encouraged to apply and may work from a remote location.
Compensation and Benefits
NBI offers the following for this position:
- Annual salary range: $80,000.00 - $91,000.00 (commensurate with experience).
- Insurance benefits, 100% of Employee Only premiums are paid by NBI: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, AD&D and Long-Term Disability insurance. New Hires are eligible on the first of the month following the date of hire.
- 160 hours of accrued Paid Time Off (combined vacation and sick time for a full year).
- 11 paid holidays.
