- Downtown Santa Cruz location- M, T, Th ,F 1:00pm - 5:00pm, W 11:00am- 3:00pm
- Scotts Valley location, M, T, W ,F 2:00pm - 4:00pm, T 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Summer Schedule:
- As needed for outings, field trips, and special events
Position Summary:
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Cruz County is seeking a responsible and safety-conscious Van Driver to join our team. This essential role involves safely transporting youth from designated school sites to the Club each weekday afternoon during the school year. Additionally, the Van Driver will provide transportation on an as-needed basis during the summer months for outings, field trips, and special events. This position plays a vital part in ensuring our members have dependable and safe access to both after-school and summer programs that support their academic achievement, personal growth, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate Club-owned van(s) to transport children from designated schools to the Boys & Girls Club, as well as provide transportation for field trips, outings, and special events.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in good working condition.
- Maintain accurate records of transportation logs, mileage, and any incidents.
- Ensure the safety and proper supervision of all youth during transport, including adherence to all booster seat and car seat laws and recommended best practices based on age, weight, and height requirements.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with Club staff, school personnel, and parents when needed.
- Follow all local traffic laws, transportation safety policies, and Boys & Girls Club procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the van interior.
- Report any vehicle maintenance needs or behavioral issues to the appropriate Club staff.
- Represent the Boys & Girls Club in a positive and professional manner at all times, including the ability to build supportive relationships with Club youth.
Qualifications:
- Minimum age: 21 years old
- Driver’s License: Valid California Commercial Driver's License (Class B) with Passenger (P) endorsement
- Driving Record: Clean driving record with no major violations; must be insurable under the Club’s vehicle insurance policy.
The following criteria will be used to determine qualifications for driver eligibility:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Be in good physical condition
- Possess the physical ability—such as strength, coordination, stamina, and mobility—required to operate a vehicle
- Have no health conditions that could cause loss of control, impair physical or mental functioning, or lead to immobilization while driving
- Have good eyesight, either naturally or with corrective lenses, and no visual impairments that could interfere with safe vehicle operation
- Have a clean driving record within the past three years, as detailed below
- Be eligible for employment, volunteer, or contract work through BGCSCC guidelines
- Experience: Prior experience transporting youth preferred.
- Background Check: Must pass a Live Scan fingerprint background check as required by state/local laws and Club policy.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and focused at all times while driving, in the midst of what can at times be a noisy or high-energy environment.
- Ability to manage time and routes efficiently and safely.
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
The following violations will automatically disqualify BGCSCC staff from being approved to drive any Club vehicles:
- DUI or DWI: No driver will be allowed to operate the vehicle if they have had a DUI or DWI previously.
- Conviction of Reckless Driving, Fleeing the Scene of an Accident, or Hit & Run.
- Any violations with a count of two points within 3 years
- Licence suspensions within 3 years
- 3 Accidents within 12 months
- Has knowingly made a false statement or concealed a material fact on an application for licensure/BGCSCC driver qualification
- Does not meet the minimum medical standards (see above)
Work Environment:
- Operates primarily in a Club van while transporting youth between school and Club locations.
- Requires the ability to sit for extended periods, enter and exit the vehicle frequently, and assist youth in entering and exiting the vehicle as needed.
- Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
